Why keeping children in families is the key to lasting change
For decades, orphanages have been seen as the solution for vulnerable children around the world. But in recent years, a growing body of research—and firsthand stories—have revealed a powerful truth: children belong in families, not institutions.
At Identity Mission, we believe that preserving families and supporting local foster care is not just a better option—it’s the right one. Here’s why:
1. Orphanages Aren’t What You Think
When people hear “orphanage,” they often imagine a place full of children with no living family. But did you know that over 80% of children in orphanages worldwide have at least one living parent or relative?
Most of these children end up in orphanages not because they are truly orphaned, but because their families are facing poverty, illness, or crisis—and feel they have no other option.

2. The Impact of Institutional Care
While orphanages may offer food, shelter, and education, they often lack what children need most: consistent love, secure attachment, and emotional development.
Studies show that long-term institutional care can lead to:
- Developmental delays
- Emotional trauma
- Behavioral issues
- Difficulty forming healthy relationships later in life
Children need more than survival—they need a sense of belonging.

3. Family-Based Care: A Better Way Forward
Family care means helping children grow up in safe, stable, and loving family environments—whether that’s with their biological family, extended relatives, or trained foster families.
It looks like:
- Empowering families to stay together through support and resources
- Equipping the local church to walk alongside struggling parents
- Building systems for local foster care in Honduras
It’s not always easy—but it’s always worth it.

4. What We’re Doing at Identity Mission
Our mission is to see every child in Honduras in a loving family. That means:
- Supporting Family Preservation Programs that strengthen vulnerable families
- Training local foster families and supporting them through the journey
- Partnering with churches to care for children and families in crisis
- Advocating for a shift away from orphanage reliance toward long-term, local solutions
We’ve seen it happen. Families reunited. Children thriving. Churches rising up. Hope restored.

5. How You Can Be Part of the Solution
You don’t have to be in Honduras to make a difference.
